An informed public, consumer (hobbyist) and
aquarium industry are fundamental to transforming the marine
ornamentals trade through market forces. Aquariums, zoos and
museums have a unique and unparalleled potential to communicate
ocean issues to the public. They have built-in audiences of
millions of visitors worldwide and a diversity of scientific
and other resources, and they are a highly trusted and respected
source of information. They are perhaps the single most important
conduit to the ocean-conscious public and to the many aquarium
hobbyists and industry operators (especially retailers) who
visit them.
Public aquariums play several key roles in partnership with
MAC to ensure that certification becomes established and the
marine ornamentals trade is sustainable: |
| |
• Raising public awareness about issues
in the marine ornamentals trade and the need to buy only
marine aquarium organisms that are certified and labeled as
sustainable; and
• Establishing acquisition policies
in favor of MAC Certified organisms whenever possible. |
The Public Aquariums’ community has started to enhance
its support toward MAC and its programs: through signing the
MAC
Public Aquariums Declaration of Support,
privileging
MAC Certified marine ornamentals within their
Institution’s acquisitions policy, organizing MAC exhibits
(from the MAC
Public Aquarium Resources Kit)… |
| |
This support illustrates indeed the transformation
of the marine ornamental trade, and the importance such Institutions
have. Being perceived by the general public as model for their
conservation, education and research programs, Public Aquariums
and Museums have started to sensitize their visitors to the
marine ornamental trade and coral reefs issues, with the introduction
of the MAC programs and international Standards.
